El Silencio (2025)

El Silencio is an artistic research project based on the statistic that 1 in 5 people have experienced child sexual abuse (CSA). By applying this figure to a population of one million people, the work represents 200,000 victims in a tangible and sensitive way, preventing the numbers from remaining abstract or distant.

The visualization materialized in three large-format volumes, each addressing a different dimension of abuse:

    •    Book I ( Child’s silence) : Where 90% of cases are never spoken about and only 10% of the children will talk about it. This imbalance is translated into lines of text: each phrase represents a child, marking those who remain silent and those who manage to speak.

    •    Book II ( Context of abuse): Showing how in 75% of cases the abuser belongs to the victim’s close circle, while 25% are strangers.

    •    Book III (Age): Reflecting that 70% of cases occur before the age of 12 and 30% after.

Each written line embodies an individual story, emphasizing both the density and the collective weight of the phenomenon. Alongside the large volumes, the installation included scenographic elements: a child-sized table holding the books, stools arranged around it, and smaller personal books, each different, containing real testimonies from people who went trought CSA. This setting created a dual experience: intimate and individual, when confronting each case and testimony, and collective and communal, when sharing the reading and reflection with others in the same space.

The project not only seeks to humanize statistical data and generate empathy, but also explores the visualization of hypothetical data; Since CSA is rarely openly discussed and the available information is largely limited to statistical studies. By reimagining these numbers in a visual and affective form, the work highlights both the magnitude and the invisibility of abuse.
